2019-20 Language Arts
Writing:
In our homeroom language arts classroom, we use the Writer's Workshop model. This includes:
•Choice-based writing and genre studies: memoir, narrative, expository, poetry, argument, test genre, multi-genre
•Gradual release model moving toward independence
•Mini-lessons and mentor texts
•Research skills to build and present knowledge
•Peer conferencing and teacher conferencing
•Direct instruction and inquiry into grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and conventions
Venues: Daily writing, publishing cycles, Research writing & presentations (Ted Talks/Tech Talks) Socratic seminar, Writer’s nights, workshopping, sharing, and blogging)
Reading, Speaking, and Listening
As a homeroom, we develop a love of reading, speak with confidence and conviction, listen from the heart and as a critical thinker, read and understand a variety of genres, appreciate multiple perspectives. This includes:
•Citing evidence to support thinking
•Drawing inferences, determine themes, provide summaries, understand plot and character, interpret information, present claims, and findings
•Engaging in collaborative discussion
Venues: Cross-curricular: social studies/science, independent reading choices, read alouds, book groups, and shared reading experiences
fiction: historical, realistic, dystopian, science, mystery, fantasy, short story, drama, and more
non-fiction: textbooks, magazines, newspapers, procedural texts, websites, biographies, and more
